Agra: After an almost year‑long manhunt, Uttar Pradesh police have taken a woman into custody in connection with a violent episode that took place in Barhan, Agra, in October 2025. The suspect is alleged to have assaulted her brother‑in‑law after he purportedly refused to marry her sister.
According to the FIR, the altercation occurred on the night of 20 October 2025, following Diwali celebrations. The victim, employed as a chemical assistant engineer with a cement firm in Haldwani, had travelled back home for the festival.
Victim Attacked Inside a Bedroom
The complaint states that after completing the Diwali puja, the man was sleeping outside the house when his sister‑in‑law summoned him to a room at around 02:00 hrs. Police allege that she then struck him with a blade, inflicting serious wounds.
His screams awakened other family members, who rushed to his side. Law enforcement arrived shortly thereafter and transported the injured man to SN Medical College, and, owing to the gravity of his condition, he was subsequently shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi.
Accused Evaded Capture
In the aftermath, the woman’s husband reportedly escorted her to his parents’ house in Etah. She disappeared from the village and remained out of police reach for months.
Persistent investigative work eventually led officers to locate her at a relative’s residence, where she was arrested.
Attempt‑to‑Murder Charge Filed
DCP West Zone Aditya Singh explained that the medical report confirmed the injuries were severe enough to be life‑threatening. Consequently, the police have upgraded the case to include an attempt‑to‑murder charge.
The probe into the motives and surrounding circumstances remains ongoing.
