New Delhi. In April, IndiGo expanded its lead over its rival airlines in the country, capturing about 59 percent of the market in the domestic market. During this, he transported 64.11 lakh passengers to their destination. The combined market share of the third-ranked Tata group airlines declined to 21.3 percent in April. According to official data, IndiGo carried 58.61 lakh passengers in March last year and had a market share of 54.8 percent in that month.

According to the data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the number of passengers in the three Tata group airlines – Air India, Air Asia India, and Vistara – in April 2022 was less than a month ago. These three airlines served 23.22 lakh passengers on their domestic network in April 2022 as compared to 25.90 lakh in March.

The Tata group’s domestic market share stood at 21.3 percent in April, up from 24.2 percent in March. It was acquired by the Tata group in October 2021, through competitive bidding of state-run Air India, at the end of January. An aviation veteran said it would not be right to test the performance of the Tata group so quickly as they are still busy managing Air India.

He said on the condition of anonymity, “Air India will have to increase the capacity to get ahead of the rivals. The company recently appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Which will take some time to bring about a clear change in operations and financial performance.

SpiceJet’s share in the domestic aviation sector stood at 9.2 percent and GoFirst’s 10.2 percent in April 2022. SpiceJet and GoFirst held 9.5 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively, in March.

Domestic airlines (excluding Alliance Air) carried a total of 356.80 lakh passengers to their destinations from January-April 2022 with an annual growth of 22.58 percent as compared to 291.08 lakh during the same period last year.
