Dehradun. State Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj expressed his deepest condolences on the demise of environmentalist Padmavibhushan Sundarlal Bahuguna, terming it an irreparable loss to the state as well as the entire country.

Expressing his deep condolences on the demise of Padmavibhushan Sundarlal Bahuguna, the pioneer of the world-famous movement like Chipko, Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj has described it as an incomparable loss to the state as well as the entire country. Maharaj said that ‘Environment Gandhi’ Sundarlal Bahuguna was on a hunger strike for sixteen days to stop the opening of liquor shops in 1971. Due to the Chipko movement, he became famous as Vrikshamitra worldwide. He strongly opposed the cutting of trees, as well as patronizing the campaign to plant trees.

Cabinet Minister Satpal Maharaj said that Padmavibhushan Sundarlal Bahuguna was impressed by the works of America’s Friend of Nature, which was awarded to him in 1980. Apart from this, he was also honored with many other awards. Maharaj said that the loss of a great man who considers the environment as a permanent property is certainly a great loss for the country and the state.

He said that the environmentalist Padmavibhushan Sundarlal Bahuguna considered the forest, soil, water, and wind of Uttarakhand as the basis of life. He also received Stockholm’s Alternative Nobel Prize in 1981 as an international recognition for his work done in the interest of society and for dedicating his life to the field of the environment.
