Dehradun. The city of Joshimath, the most important stop on the journey of Badrinath Dham, is already facing the brunt of landslides and now Karnprayag has also increased the concern. Though it is not in Joshimath-like condition, due to various reasons, buildings have been damaged in one part of the city. Till now 48 such buildings have been identified, in which cracks have come. Karnaprayag, one of the Panchprayag, is also the second main stop of the Badrinath Yatra. The government has become active to overcome the trouble here. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has given instructions to conduct a detailed geological survey of Karnprayag. Preparations are on hand over the responsibility to IIT Roorkee and the Geological Survey of India.

Karnprayag is 82 kilometers away from Joshimath town in the frontier Chamoli district. Situated on the banks of the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar, the biggest tributaries of the Ganges, this city has the distinction of being included in Panchprayag. The other four Prayags are Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. All these have religious and spiritual significance. If we take Karnaprayag, it is the second important stop of the Badrinath Yatra. This city connects the summer capital Gairsain, then the road directly connecting both the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions passes through here. It is also the last station of the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project in the direction of the rail network in the mountains.

Disaster Management Secretary Dr. Ranjit Kumar Sinha said that in accordance with the instructions of the Chief Minister, now the entire Karnaprayag will be geotechnical from IIT and geological survey from the Geological Survey of India. He told that ‘IIT Roorkee is conducting a geotechnical survey of the area of Karnprayag where cracks have appeared in the buildings. Karnprayag city is also worried about cracks in buildings these days. Buildings in Bahugunanagar and the ITI area are getting damaged due for different reasons. 22 houses have been damaged here. 48 such houses have been identified which have cracks. In the midst of this scenario, the people of Karnprayag are also getting worried.

According to Karnprayag MLA Anil Nautiyal, the situation in Karnprayag is different from Joshimath. There are different reasons for the damage and cracks in the buildings. Some houses were damaged during road construction in the past and some due to heavy rains. The erosion caused by the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers is also believed to be the reason. He told that the tunnel of the rail project is far away from the city. Due to this, the possibility of damage to buildings is weak.
