About 150 meters long stairs of Gartang Gali are now visible in a new color. The stairs of Gartang Gali, built at an altitude of about 11 thousand feet, are a unique example of engineering. Such an example of human workmanship and courage will not be found to be seen in any other part of the country.

This wooden staircase bridge, which was closed after the 1962 Sino-Indian war, has now been reopened for tourists after nearly 59 years. Keeping in mind the Corona guidelines and security, only ten people are being sent to the bridge at a time. The Pathans who came from Peshawar built this bridge 150 years ago. Before independence, the Tibet track was built through Nelong Valley in Uttarkashi for trade with Tibet. This track was prepared by laying an iron rod in the steep rock side near Bhairon Ghati and laying wood on it. Through this, clothes made of wool, leather, and salt were transported from Tibet to Badahat in Uttarkashi. This bridge gives an exciting view of the Nelang Valley. The region is rich in flora and fauna and is home to rare animals such as the snow leopard and the blue sheep.

Nelang Valley is a strategically sensitive area. Gartang Gali is situated in the Jad Ganga valley on the footpath connecting Bhairav ​​Ghati to Nelang. The Nelang valley of Uttarkashi district is adjacent to the China border. India’s Sumla, Mandi, Nila Pani, Tripani, PDA, and Jadung are the last posts on the border.

Satpal Maharaj Tourism Minister Uttarakhand said that the Government of India had banned the movement of tourists, keeping in mind the situation created after the Indo-China war in the year 1962, the Government of India had banned the movement of tourists in the Inner Line area of ​​Uttarkashi. . The villagers here have been allowed to worship once in a year after completing a certain procedure. After this, permission was given by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India for tourists from all over the country to go to Nelong Valley from the year 2015.

Under this, the steps of the historic Gartang street located in the Nelong valley have been opened for tourists after completing the reconstruction work at a cost of Rs 64 lakh. After the opening of Gartang Gali, the local people and people associated with adventure tourism are getting benefits. It is becoming a major center for trekking enthusiasts.

Mayur Dixit, District Magistrate, Uttarkashi said that a lot of difficulties had to be faced in the reconstruction works. The reconstruction works in the old style were completed in the month of July. Keeping in mind the Corona rules and security, only ten tourists are being allowed entry at a time.
