Lucknow – After a detailed aerial and ground assessment of water‑logged zones around the state capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a far‑reaching flood‑control initiative. The flagship component is a raised embankment stretching from Faizullaganj to Naimish, designed to curb the frequent overflow of the Gomti River.
Eco‑Friendly Embankment as a Flood Shield
The proposed structure will double as a green corridor, with a paved roadway planned to run along the top of the levee. Survey teams have been tasked with a high‑resolution, top‑down mapping of the Gomti’s banks and the preparation of a detailed project dossier. Alongside the barrier, integrated drainage networks and pumping stations will channel rainwater that accumulates outside the protected zone, ensuring swift removal.
On‑Site Relief Assessment
During a visit to the flood‑stricken neighbourhood of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister met with locals, inspected a medical camp, and supervised the distribution of emergency provisions. He ordered the relocation of families from vulnerable spots to temporary relief shelters set up in schools and community halls.
Assistance for Displaced Households
Camp administrators are now required to serve hot meals twice a day, provide milk for children, and supply nutrient‑rich food for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, while sites lacking electricity will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Framework
Families who lost members to drowning or lightning will receive an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Households whose homes were completely destroyed and meet eligibility criteria will be allocated houses under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural losses—including crops and livestock—will be evaluated so that eligible farmers can claim compensation.
Relief Packs Containing 26 Essentials
Each affected family is being handed a kit comprising 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproof material. The kits are intended to sustain families until normal supply chains are restored.
Security and Health Provisions
The CM directed police, Home Guards, PRD personnel and local watchmen to patrol the camps and the vacated houses, safeguarding property and preventing looting. Health centres will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections on hand, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit areas.
Why This Year’s Floods Were So Severe
Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even parts of Nepal—raised river levels dramatically, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. The Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment is now being positioned as a long‑term safeguard, promising not only flood mitigation but also improved connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
