Prison meeting fuels fresh debate over Uttar Pradesh polls
Rampur: In a rare encounter behind bars, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav sat down with veteran leader Azam Khan inside Rampur jail. The hour‑long dialogue reportedly touched every one of the state’s 403 assembly seats, probing potential candidates and possible seat‑sharing formulas with alliance partners as the election draws near.
Well‑being check and political probing
Beyond the electoral calculus, Yadav inquired about Khan’s health and used the moment to assess the senior figure’s readiness for an intensive campaign trail. The two had previously met on 8 October 2025 at Khan’s Rampur residence while he was out of custody, making this the latest in a series of tactical touchpoints.
All‑403 sweep: candidate and alliance deliberations
According to party insiders, the conversation spanned possible contenders for western Uttar Pradesh as well as other regions, and examined how seats might be divided among the parties that form the Samajwadi alliance. The leaders also discussed ways to strengthen the party’s grassroots network and identify issues that could challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run‑up to the vote.
Yadav stopped short of naming specific aspirants or concrete seat‑sharing formulas, noting that the full picture will emerge once the official candidate list is released.
“We are leaving no stone unturned across the 403 seats,” Yadav said after the meeting.
Rampur City remains an enigma
The meeting revived speculation about who the Samajwadi Party will field in the Rampur City constituency. When pressed, Yadav smiled and replied, “Why should I give it away now? Wait for the list.”
Rampur City has long been Khan’s stronghold, having won the seat ten times. After his incarceration, his wife Tazeen Fatma briefly held the MLA post, and the seat is currently occupied by BJP legislator Akash Saxena, who has lodged several complaints against Khan and his family. The party’s eventual choice for the constituency is expected to draw intense scrutiny.
Khan’s ticket stance
Addressing rumours of seat demands, Yadav categorically stated that Khan did not request a particular ticket. Instead, Khan offered a handful of strategic suggestions that were taken up by the party leadership. Yadav also conveyed his wishes for Khan’s speedy recovery and expressed confidence that justice will be served.
Strategic outlook ahead of the polls
The jail‑side rendezvous underscores the Samajwadi Party’s meticulous groundwork for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. While the exact roster of candidates and any alliance‑wide seat‑sharing details remain under wraps, the focus on all 403 constituencies signals a concerted effort to map out a winning formula.
All eyes now turn to the party’s forthcoming announcement, which will reveal whether the suggestions floated during the meeting translate into concrete changes on the ground.
