Extensive CCTV Roll‑out Around the Taj Mahal
The Agra Development Authority has approved a comprehensive expansion of video monitoring around the iconic Taj Mahal. Ninety state‑of‑the‑art cameras will be deployed within a 500‑metre radius, creating a tighter surveillance net for the monument’s environs.
Why the Expanded Network Is Crucial
The new devices will concentrate on the so‑called “yellow zone” that surrounds the Taj Mahal, covering main thoroughfares, entry points and other high‑traffic areas that presently lack adequate visual oversight.
With broader visual coverage, security agencies will gain a clearer real‑time picture of on‑ground activity, enabling quicker responses to suspicious or disruptive behaviour.
Enhancing Existing Surveillance Infrastructure
The site already benefits from a CCTV framework installed during the 2016 Tajganj project, later augmented with smart poles that combine cameras and public‑address systems.
Nevertheless, coverage gaps persist. The additional ninety units are intended to fill those voids, delivering a more seamless and continuous monitoring blanket.
Security duties are divided by zones: the monument itself lies within the “red zone,” protected by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while the surrounding 500‑metre “yellow zone” falls under the jurisdiction of local police and the Punjab and Chandigarh (PAC) forces.
Putting Tourist Safety First
Officials expect the reinforced camera network to not only aid law‑enforcement but also enhance the experience of the millions of visitors who come each year. Improved monitoring can curb unauthorised activities, ease crowd‑related congestion and deter incidents targeting tourists.
The upgrade also seeks to keep a tighter watch on individuals known to harass or threaten visitors, further solidifying the Taj Mahal’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.
Roll‑out Schedule
With the tender process already in motion, the Agra Development Authority has instructed contractors to begin installation as soon as the paperwork is cleared. A six‑month deadline underscores the urgency of bolstering security around one of India’s most treasured heritage sites.
Once operational, the expanded system will provide a robust, real‑time view of activity around the Taj Mahal, strengthening both protection measures and overall site management.
