Background of the case

In October 2024 the lifeless body of a six‑year‑old girl was found inside an abandoned warehouse located in the Daladabari area of Jaigaon, Alipurduar. Investigators quickly zeroed in on the child’s neighbours, alleging they orchestrated a vicious rape followed by murder.

Investigation and arrests

Police uncovered a premeditated kidnapping, noting that the prime suspect had lured the girl under false pretences. The inquiry relied heavily on CCTV footage, forensic reports and DNA profiling. Consequently, Bablu Mian was taken into custody first, with Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh arrested thereafter.

Twenty‑two eyewitness statements were recorded, corroborating the physical evidence and confirming the participation of all four men.

Trial proceedings and verdict

The fast‑track bench examined the case for approximately eighteen months before delivering its judgment. Prosecutor Debaranjan Bandyopadhyay pressed for the severest punishments permitted by law.

Convinced by the weight of the proof, the court sentenced Bablu Mian to death. The remaining three accused—Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh—were each handed life imprisonment. The prosecution’s claim that the victim’s remains had been incinerated was rejected due to insufficient proof.

Beyond the custodial sentences, the state government was directed to compensate the bereaved family with ₹6 lakh. The mother of the child expressed that the family had hoped for the harshest penalty possible.

The judgment concludes the matter at the fast‑track level, though the convicted parties retain the right to challenge the decision before higher courts.
