Deadly Bathing Mishap at Sur Ghat

During the Jitiya festivities, two eighteen‑year‑old girls, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the swift currents of the Yamuna River at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and tragically drowned while performing the customary river‑bath ceremony.

Rescue Efforts and Retrieval

Bystanders raised alarms as the teenagers disappeared beneath the water. Local rescue divers responded instantly, combing the river to locate the bodies. Although the divers succeeded in bringing the victims ashore, the force of the river had already claimed their lives.

Police Intervention and Autopsy

A team from Timarpur police station arrived without delay, secured the bodies and sent them for post‑mortem analysis.

“The girls entered a deeper stretch of the river during the ritual and, regrettably, drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.

An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact chain of events that led to the drownings.

Relatives Demand Better Ghat Safety

In the aftermath, the families of Kajal and Pinky have raised serious concerns about the lack of safety infrastructure at Sur Ghat. They claim the area was missing proper barricades, clear warning signage, and on‑site security personnel to prevent entry into the hazardous deep water.

Police officials have assured that they will reassess current safety provisions and address the shortcomings highlighted by the grieving relatives.
