India Overpowers Sri Lanka to Secure Eighth Women’s Asia Cup Crown

New Delhi: The Indian women’s cricket side delivered a masterclass in the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup final, cruising to a 72‑run victory over Sri Lanka and clinching a record‑breaking eighth title.

Match Summary

Winning the toss, India elected to bat and posted a formidable 183 for five in their allotted 20 overs. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma laid a solid foundation with a 129‑run partnership. Verma struck a rapid 68 off 39 balls, while Mandhana contributed 59 off 39, setting a daunting target.

After the openers fell, the innings slowed slightly. Richa Ghosh added 17, Harmanpreet Kaur chipped in 14, and Deepti Sharma made five before being run‑out. Late‑order G. Kamalini remained unbeaten on 15, ensuring the total stayed well above 180.

Sri Lanka’s Chase Falters

Facing a steep chase of 184, Sri Lanka stumbled early when Kranti Gaud removed Imisha Dulani for just four runs. Captain Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne steadied the innings with a 58‑run stand for the second wicket, but Deepti Sharma soon broke it by dismissing Athapaththu for 36.

India’s bowlers kept the pressure relentless, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Gunaratne managed 20, Harshitha Samarawickrama nine, and Kavisha Dilhari seven, while Nilakshi de Silva’s 22‑run effort was insufficient. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111 in the full 20 overs.

Key bowling figures went to Sri Charani, who claimed four wickets, supported by Deepti Sharma’s three‑for‑16. Kranti Gaud, Shafali Verma and Prema Rawat each added a wicket.

Historic Eighth Title

The win cements India’s supremacy in the Women’s Asia Cup, marking their eighth triumph. The team has previously lifted the trophy in the ODI format (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008) and the T20 format (2012, 2016, 2022, 2026). After runner‑up finishes in 2018 and 2024, the Indian side rebounded emphatically in 2026, reinforcing their dominant legacy.
