Winter Pause at the Sacred Gangotri Shrine

Uttarkashi authorities have confirmed that the revered Gangotri Temple will be sealed for the winter season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The closure coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and aligns with the traditional celebrations of Annakoot and Govardhan Puja.

Ceremonial Send‑off

The temple’s governing body, led by Secretary Suresh Semwal, announced the timetable after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final bells echo, the ceremonial palanquin carrying the idol of Goddess Ganga will be escorted out of the sanctum in a grand procession, accompanied by an Army band and resonant chants of “Jai Maa Ganga.”

The Trek to Mukhba

Following the farewell rites, the holy palanquin will journey to Mukhba, the lofty hamlet that serves as Ganga’s winter residence. The convoy is slated to reach Mukhba on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rituals will be performed.

Devotees are welcome to gather at the temporary shrine in Mukhba, offering their respects and seeking blessings throughout the six‑month winter period. This relocation ensures that worship continues uninterrupted despite the main temple’s inaccessibility due to heavy snowfall.

Why the Seasonal Shift Matters

The winter shutdown marks the end of the Char Dham pilgrimage season for the year. While the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin safeguards the spiritual rhythm for pilgrims who wish to maintain their devotion to the river goddess.

For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of worship, allowing believers to stay connected with Goddess Ganga until the temple reopens in spring.
