New Delhi – In the lead‑up to the scheduled demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10, the Delhi Police have reiterated that a written sanction is mandatory for every rally, sit‑in, or organized gathering at the landmark venue. Authorities warned that proceeding without the requisite approval could invite legal repercussions.
Written clearance mandatory
Police officials emphasized that simply showing up at Jantar Mantar does not constitute permission. Event planners must obtain a formal endorsement from the competent authority before any activity commences.
Heightened security amid escalating political activity
The reminder comes as political mobilisation intensifies across the capital. Earlier this week, the INDIA coalition announced a rally outside the Election Commission, only to cancel it after revising its tactics. Nevertheless, police have maintained barricades, checkpoints and extra personnel along key routes to Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission premises.
Detentions during recent protests
According to police reports, a group of opposition supporters assembled near Ashoka Road and the Buta Singh Chambers area. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav reportedly arrived at Jantar Mantar with more than fifty followers before officers intervened and detained several participants.
The situation escalated when some leaders moved toward Buta Singh Chambers, prompting officers stationed at Jantar Mantar and nearby locations to step in. Congress members claimed their buses were stopped, leading to a confrontation. Among those taken into custody were Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, who were later transferred to separate police stations.
New advisory for the October 10 demonstration
Against this backdrop, the police issued a fresh advisory reiterating the procedural steps required for any public demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The notice applies to all forms of organised gatherings – from rallies to sit‑ins – at the designated protest ground.
Application deadline: ten days in advance
The department cited the Supreme Court’s direction in Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan vs Union of India while outlining the protocol. Applicants must submit a request to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi district, at least 10 days before the intended date of the event.
Consequences for ignoring the rule
Police cautioned that any assembly held without the prescribed permission could trigger action under existing regulations. As political parties gear up for further demonstrations, security arrangements around Jantar Mantar and other sensitive sites are expected to remain robust to manage crowds, safeguard traffic flow and prevent disruptions.
With October 10 fast approaching, officials urge organisers to adhere strictly to the established process and obtain the necessary clearance before staging any public programme at the historic protest venue.
