Homs, Syria – A passenger bus traveling close to the Masyaf Bridge in the western Homs countryside was suddenly assaulted by an unknown group of gunmen, resulting in at least seven fatalities and four injuries. The vehicle was carrying staff from a local firm who were heading home after a full workday.
Syria’s state news outlet SANA reported that the perpetrators have not been identified. The wounded were swiftly transferred to nearby medical facilities, while security forces moved in to cordon off the area.
Formal Inquiry Initiated
Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine who ordered the assault and what motive lay behind it. No organization or individual has claimed responsibility, and officials have refrained from naming any suspects publicly.
"We regard this attack as an effort to destabilise the region and erode security," said Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban, commander of the Homs Internal Security Forces.
Forensic teams are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.
Workers Targeted on Their Way Home
Initial reports confirm the bus was transporting civilian employees back to their homes after completing their duties. Emergency responders rushed the casualties to hospitals throughout the Homs governorate, where they received urgent care.
Officials stressed that the investigation will continue until all details of the incident are clarified and those responsible are held accountable.
Syria’s Ongoing Security Challenges
The shooting occurs against a backdrop of persistent insecurity that has lingered for more than 13 years of conflict, even after the ouster of Bashar al‑Assad’s government in December 2024. While the authorities strive for stability, sporadic gunfire and violent episodes continue to erupt across various provinces.
