Dehradun, Uttarakhand – As the Char Dham Yatra draws to a close for the cold months, the stream of pilgrims shows no sign of abating. Tens of thousands continue to trek toward the revered sanctuaries of Kedarnath and Badrinath, pushing the combined footfall of the four Char Dham shrines and Hemkund Sahib beyond the six‑million threshold – an unprecedented milestone.
The Badrinath Temple is scheduled to lock its gates on 16 November, officially marking the end of the pilgrimage season for winter. After the shutdown, worshippers will be redirected to the designated winter‑time worship centres that serve the four holy sites.
Since its launch on 19 April, the Yatra has persisted through the monsoon, with Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Hemkund Sahib all reporting a noticeable rise in pilgrim numbers. Even in these final weeks, the crowds remain robust.
Hemant Dwivedi, chairman of the Badrinath‑Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), noted that Kedarnath and Badrinath continue to attract large congregations. He highlighted close coordination with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to ensure a smooth pilgrimage experience, pointing out a “significant rise” in devotees this year.
Chief Minister Dhami welcomed the six‑million landmark, calling it proof of the deep faith people hold for Uttarakhand’s sacred destinations.
The state administration is actively upgrading the pilgrimage corridor – improving road links, expanding medical facilities, fine‑tuning traffic management and strengthening security measures to make the journey safer and more comfortable for everyone.

Official tallies for the five holy sites stand as follows:

- Yamunotri Dham: 945,572 pilgrims
- Gangotri Dham: 838,422 pilgrims

These figures reinforce Uttarakhand’s reputation as a premier spiritual hub and underscore the urgent need for effective crowd‑control, reliable transport, ample medical services and robust safety protocols throughout the pilgrimage season.
