Uttarakhand’s sacred Char Dham circuit—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri—attracted an astonishing 5,618,497 devotees in 2023, surpassing the earlier high and establishing a new milestone for religious tourism in the region.

Historic Visitor Numbers

Throughout the 2023 season, pilgrims from every corner of India and abroad converged on the four holy sites, pushing the total footfall past the 56‑lakh mark for the first time. By mid‑September the count had already exceeded 5.056 million, highlighting a consistent upward trajectory.

Prioritising Safety and Comfort

State officials have stepped up preparations to accommodate the swelling crowds while ensuring their well‑being. Key enhancements include:

  • Expanded medical outposts along the routes
  • Stricter traffic regulation and dedicated parking zones
  • Reliable potable‑water supply points
  • Upgraded sanitation facilities at major halt points
  • Additional lodging options for trekkers and families

Emergency response squads—comprising district administrators, police, health officers, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies—remain on standby, especially on the fragile Himalayan stretches prone to landslides and sudden weather changes.

Infrastructure Drive Boosts Confidence

Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, large‑scale connectivity projects around Kedarnath, Badrinath and the other sanctums have accelerated. New road alignments, modernised helipads and upgraded pilgrim amenities have transformed the journey, encouraging even more devotees to embark on the trek.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Remarks

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lauded the achievement, stressing that every pilgrim is regarded as an honoured guest of Uttarakhand. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to provide a safe, comfortable passage and praised the collective effort of administrators, police, health workers, SDRF personnel, local bodies, priests and residents.

With the 2023 Char Dham Yatra crossing the 56‑lakh threshold, Uttarakhand has cemented its reputation as a premier destination for spiritual seekers, setting an ambitious benchmark for future pilgrimage seasons.
