New Delhi: In a video conversation on Friday, Captain Smit Machchhar – the Indian aviator at the centre of the recent Flydubai mid‑air emergency – recounted how he kept fighting even after being badly hurt.

The trigger that led to the emergency

The Flydubai jet was cruising from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an unexpected issue with the co‑pilot caused the aircraft to lose altitude abruptly. Machchhar was injured amid the turmoil, and the plane entered a steep dive. Ultimately, passengers and crew breached the cockpit, and the aircraft was steered to a safe landing in Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar’s narration of the decisive moments

From his hospital bed, the captain explained that decades of flying experience allowed him to sense the rapid descent even after being knocked to the floor.

Ignoring the pain, he realised immediate action was required. He wrested the cockpit door open, giving passengers and crew a chance to rush in and help stabilise the aircraft.

Machchhar highlighted his 17‑year career, including 11 years as a captain, stressing that his training enabled him to recognise the aircraft’s distress signals in the chaos.

PM Modi lauds the pilot’s composure

During the exchange, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s bravery, patience and quick decision‑making, also sending heartfelt wishes for a swift, full recovery.

The captain became visibly emotional while describing the instant he sensed the aircraft’s plunge and felt compelled to intervene rather than remain a passive observer.

Safe landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia

Reports indicate the flight carried more than 170 passengers and crew. After the cabin crew and passengers intervened, a second pair of Flydubai pilots took control and guided the plane to a safe touchdown at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar continues to receive medical treatment following the incident.

Faith as a source of calm

Machchhar also disclosed that his devotion played a crucial role during the ordeal. He regularly recites the Hanuman Chalisa whenever he faces fear or hardship, and he continued the chant throughout the emergency.

The video call concluded with PM Modi reiterating his hopes for the captain’s rapid recuperation after the harrowing episode that threatened the flight and everyone on board.
