All newcomers, no sitting members
The Bharatiya Janata Party has submitted eight fresh names for the ten Rajya Sabha seats that Uttar Pradesh will fill. None of the nominees currently occupies a seat in the Upper House, signalling the party’s drive to bring new faces into the fray before the October 16 vote.
Caste equilibrium at the core of the roster
Reflecting the state’s intricate social tapestry, the selection weaves together representatives from four prominent communities.
OBC segment
- Dharampal Singh – a Lodhi legislator from Aonla, known for his grassroots parliamentary work.
- Prakash Pal – head of the state OBC Morcha, recognised for his organisational outreach across the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand corridor.
- Shruti Gangwar – a youthful leader from Bareilly and daughter of senior BJP stalwart Santosh Gangwar.
Brahmin representation
- Radhakant Ojha – veteran lawyer from Prayagraj and former president of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association.
- Gopi Krishna Pandey – long‑standing party functionary with deep roots in the organisational hierarchy.
Dalit voices
- Vidyasagar Sonkar – former Lok Sabha MP and ex‑member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
- Priyanka Singh Rawat – ex‑MP from Barabanki, bringing seasoned parliamentary experience.
Rajput inclusion
Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, the state general secretary and former MLA from Etmadpur, completes the caste mosaic.
Organisational weight and gender parity
Beyond community balance, the BJP’s list showcases heavyweights in party‑building. Prakash Pal’s tenure overseeing the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand region and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan’s strategic role at the state level underline the emphasis on seasoned operatives.
Two women—Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar—feature on the slate, marking a modest but meaningful step toward gender inclusion.
Timeline and opposition outlook
Nomination papers are due by October 6, with the actual voting scheduled for October 16. The Samajwadi Party has already named Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Nathwani as its contenders, setting up a contest that could range from a clear BJP victory to a tightly contested battle for the Upper House seats.
