Clash Over Form 6 and the Voter‑Roll Overhaul Intensifies
New Delhi – The political standoff between the ruling BJP and the INDIA alliance grew sharper on Tuesday after the BJP alleged that Congress was weaponising a petition to the Election Commission. The party argues that the opposition’s push to scrutinise the voter‑registration mechanism is a calculated effort to rekindle Rahul Gandhi’s political momentum.
BJP Rebuts Congress’ Interpretation of Supreme Court Remarks
National spokesperson Sambit Patra maintained that Congress is misrepresenting the Supreme Court’s comments on Form 6 – the application citizens file to be entered on the electoral rolls. Patra clarified that the apex court has not labelled the form unlawful; it merely ordered a probe into alleged tampering.
Opposition’s Continued Push Against the CEC
Leaders of the INDIA bloc converged on the Election Commission’s Delhi headquarters, demanding explanations from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the Special Intensive Revision exercise. They contend that procedural tweaks to Form 6 were introduced without adequate oversight and call for greater transparency.
BJP Dismisses Illegality Allegations
Patra stressed that the Supreme Court notices are procedural, not a verdict of wrongdoing. He highlighted the Election Commission’s position that the statutory Form 6 remains unchanged and that the revision was executed under decisions already sanctioned by the commission.
Congress’s Counter‑Argument
The opposition maintains that the purported changes to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi has framed the dispute as a litmus test of the commission’s neutrality, while Congress urges an independent audit of the voter‑roll update.
Underlying Motives Behind the Demonstration
Patra suggested that the protest is less about safeguarding electoral integrity and more about providing Rahul Gandhi a platform to re‑emerge on the national stage. He warned that targeting constitutional bodies could become a recurring strategy for the opposition.
With both sides entrenched in their narratives, the Form 6 controversy is poised to dominate political discourse as the country approaches the next election.
